Perhaps you may remember, a short time ago I told you of one of the best-kept secrets in Harford County. The fact that there is a full-sized golf course “smack-dab” in the middle of the town of Belair, very active and open for membership. I told you at the time that there were more “secret” places in Harford and I would be revealing them to you.
If you own your home, this may not be of immediate concern to you but read it you should, you may have a relative or friend that is in need of an apartment to rent or your own future needs may change. There is a well maintained Apartment Complex in this county that has a group of apartments on a waterfront location where you can almost fish from your ground floor patio. If you have a small boat, you may tie it up there. A waterway, we call it a canal, runs past and if followed, leads you past a Marina and out a channel that takes you to the Gunpowder River and on to the Chesapeake Bay.
On the other side of the canal is an Island where the are houses full of people who have docks and piers with boats of various sizes and shapes tied to them. The island is filled with birds whose singing can be heard all the day long. The Island can be accessed by a short bridge over the canal or a small causeway. On the island is a restored historical mansion that was built before the Revolution from bricks brought over from England as ballast in ships seeking tobacco and grain from local farms. But this is not about the Island but about a peaceful and quiet place to live where there is no traffic noise, save an occasional boat on the canal or a distant train crossing the bridge over the Gunpowder River
There are Bald Eagles and Osprey that nest and live nearby that visit the canal and they can be seen diving in and catching the fish in their razor-sharp talons. The people who live there also fish from the concrete wall that lines the canal. There are also several Great Blue Heron who live in our midst and fish the same waters, tame enough to almost be hand-fed by the fishermen. In fact there is at least one, maybe even two of them who will fly in when they see a fisherman and stand about twenty feet away from him or her along the wall. When a small fish is caught, they will toss it to the Heron who will pick it up with his long, pointed bill and let it slide, head first, down that long gullet. This is a show you can see almost every week-end.
The apartment complex is called Harborside Village and is located in Joppatowne just inside the Harford County line. It has easy access to I95 for inter-state travel or Rt 40 for County travel and for you shoppers, White Marsh is as close or maybe even closer than our main town of Belair. The apartments are occupied mostly by retirees and hard-working folk like yourselves who prefer to rent. The buildings are three stories and are built from the waters-edge back , with some being just water-view.
Harborside Village must be seen from my perspective to be appreciated….I have lived here for 10 years now and still think of it as a vacation spot and I await the word from someone who it is time to go home now. The people who manage the complex are very competent and repairs are done quickly and on-going maintenance is constant. I am sure there are other rental properties in and around Harford County that are nice but this one is exceptional.
When you first get here, you can almost “hear” the lack of noise but once you become accustomed to it, you feel like you never want to leave. If you want to get on the water with a first floor patio, you may have to wait a bit, but the wait is worth it. And remember, this is one of those secret places in Harford County and now you’ve found out about it.
The next time you are in the area, maybe visiting the Amish Farmers Market or the big Flea Market, stop in and check out Harborside, you’ll be surprised and you will have it for future reference. Let me know what you think.
There is another secret of Harford not too far away and sometime soon, I’ll tell you all about it.
