Healthy Sloppy Joes

Looking for something cheap, easy and healthy to feed your family for dinner tonight?  How about some healthy Sloppy Joes?  This is another great recipe submitted by our very own Michele Wieland.  It’s one she found in the Eating for Life Cookbook and makes for her own family.



  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ red onion chopped
  • 1 can (8oz) no salt added tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Dash of hot pepper sauce
  • 4 whole wheat buns or rolls
  • 4 lettuce leaves


  1. In a large skillet, combine ground turkey, black pepper and onion . Cook over medium heat until turkey is no longer pink.
  2. Stir in rest of ingredients (not rolls and lettuce – of course!) Simmer about 10 mins over low heat, stirring occasionally until mixture has thickened.
  3. Top buns with lettuce and a portion of mixture.
  4. Serve with a side salad or veggies of your choice.
